Weekend Recap: Markham Clinches; Toronto and Shenzhen Compete for Last Playoff Spot

This was the last weekend of the regular season and for some teams, the last time they would play this year.  Calgary and Montreal have already clinched a playoff spot leaving a tight race between Markham, Toronto and Shenzhen.

Calgary concluded their three-game road trip to Shenzhen, winning all three games to sweep the Rays. On Friday, the Inferno won 4-3 in OT with the winning goal scored by Jenner.  Jenner scored earlier in the game along with Johnston and Gosling to get the win. Carpenter, Miller and Mercer scored for the Rays. The Inferno looked for the sweep on Saturday, fighting hard against the Rays defence. Llanes and Bunton paved the way for the Rays but the Inferno offense kept rolling with goals from Turnbull, Jenner, Decker and Gosling to get the 4-3 win.  Calgary sits in first place heading into the playoffs.

Markham was looking to clinch a playoff spot against the second place team, Les Canadiennes.  Saturday, Les Canadiennes held their annual Pink in the Rink to raise money for breast cancer. The team sported pink jerseys for the game which can be bid on online. It was a fast-paced game with goals from Bach, M. Daoust and Saulnier with Montreal taking the game 2-1.  Sunday, the Thunder came in thirsty for the win and beat Les Canadiennes 3-2. Saulnier and Bettez scored for Les Canadiennes while Poulin collected her 50th point this season. Jones, Rattray and Stacey were the goal scorers for the Thunder. With the win, Markham clinched their spot in the playoffs leaving the last spot open to Toronto or Shenzhen.

The Blades were in Toronto for their last two games of the 18/19 season with Toronto looking to sweep the weekend to fight for their spot in the playoffs.  Saturday, the Furies beat the Blades 5-1 with goals scored by Nurse, Prevost, Spooner, Howard and Fulton. Grieves collected the only goal for the Blades. With another 4-1 win on Sunday, the Furies are one step closer to their playoff spot.  The Furies play Tuesday against the Thunder which will determine if they are in or out of the postseason.
