Weekend Recap: Kunlun Cools Off Les Canadiennes, Inferno Stay on Top

The weekend kicked off with a bang in Montreal, as Les Canadiennes hosted Kunlun Red Star at the Bell Centre. A crowd of 5,187 turned out for the historic match-up, which ended Kunlun (2-4-0) handing Montreal its first loss of the season in a 3-1 final. Goaltender Yuqing Wang stopped 23 of the 24 shots she faced to earn her very first CWHL win. Both of Kunlun’s wins have come against the past two Clarkson Cup finalists.

Les Canadiennes (5-1-0) avenged the loss on Sunday, topping Kunlun 5-3. It was the 76th regular season victory for Montreal head coach Dany Brunet, setting a new CWHL record for all-time wins (regular season).

Over in Toronto, the Calgary Inferno (6-0-2) remained the only team without a regulation loss in their series split with the Furies over the weekend. The Furies (3-3-0) overcame a last-second, game-tying goal by Brittany Esposito on Saturday to skate away with a shootout win. Calgary returned to its winning ways on Sunday with goaltender Lindsey Post picking up her first shutout in a 2-0 triumph.

Red Star forward Kelli Stack scored a pair of goals on the weekend, extending her point streak to four games, and Calgary’s Rhianna Khurio added one to her total to give each five goals on the season, one shy of the CWHL lead.
