Weekend Recap: Inferno on Top, Rays Keep Rolling

The weather is cooling down but the Calgary Inferno and Vanke Rays are turning up the heat.

With top spot in the CWHL on the line, the Inferno swept their weekend set against the Markham Thunder, showing off their powerful offence with a 7-2 win in Sunday’s outing. That moved the Inferno to the top of the CWHL standings with 11 points.

Vanke, meanwhile, visited the Boston Blades, skating away with a shootout win on Saturday before earning a 7-2 victory of its own in the first two games of their three-game series. The two clubs will face off once again on Tuesday night at 7:40 p.m. at Larsen Skating Rink at Eruzione Center in Winthrop, MA.

Cayley Mercer, Vanke’s first pick in the 2017 CWHL Draft, recorded four points in Sunday’s win, vaulting her to the top spot in League scoring with nine points (three goals, six assists) in four games. Teammate and fellow rookie Hanna Bunton scored three goals on the weekend to give her five on the young season, tied with Markham’s Jamie Lee Rattray for most in the CWHL.

Inferno rookie Sophie Shirley recorded her third multi-point game of the season and now sits third in CWHL scoring with seven points (three goals, four assists).
