Weekend Recap – Calgary, Montreal & Toronto Take the Weekend

The second weekend of home openers kicked off on Saturday with the Worcester Blades hosting the Toronto Furies and the Calgary Inferno welcoming the Shenzhen KRS Vanke Rays.  Les Canadiennes de Montréal remained at home facing off against the Markham Thunder.

The Blades struggles continued this weekend with the team losing both games in their home openers to the Furies 2-1 and 2-0.  In both Calgary and Montreal, the home teams bested their opponents.  The Inferno home openers earned the team 4 points with two wins over the Rays; 2-0 Saturday and 6-1 on Sunday.  Montreal continued their scoring streak with a 5-1 win over the Thunder Saturday and 7-1 win on Sunday.

Natalie Spooner and Shiann Darkangelo led the way for the Furies this weekend, Natalie scoring the only goals for the Furies Saturday and Shiann scoring the only 2 goals on Sunday. Casey Stathopoulos was the only Blade to collect a point with her goal on Saturday.  Brianna Decker and Tori Hickel had the only goals on Saturday in Calgary, Tori’s being her first in the CWHL. On Sunday, Venla Hovi and Halli Krzyzaniak scored their first CWHL goals while Hanna Bunton scored the only goal for the Rays this weekend.  In Montreal,  Genevieve Bannon scored her first CWHL goals, Jill leading the way in scoring for the Canadiennes this weekend. Jenna McParland and Jamie Lee Rattray collected the points for the Thunder.
