Toronto, ON – The Toronto Furies returned home on Saturday evening to take on Les Canadiennes de Montreal in a rematch of their October weekend series where Les Canadiennes beat the Furies in back to back games.
Montreal opened the scoring at the 9:58 mark of the first period when Shannon Moulson of the Furies was sent off for hooking and Caroline Ouellette (6) made the most of the Montreal power play. Assisting on the goal were Sarah Lefort and Mari-Philip Poulin. Toronto would get their opportunity on the power play later on in the period when Emmanuelle Blais was sent off for tripping but they were unable to capitalize. Montreal would out shoot the Furies 9-7 at the end of 20 minutes.
The second period would see end to end action for both teams as Toronto pushed to tie the game and Montreal looked to extend their lead. Toronto would get three power play opportunities throughout the 20 minutes. It wasn’t until the end of the second period with Cathy Chartrand returning to the ice following a two minute roughing call that Toronto would find the back of the net. Julie Allen received a pass from Michela Cava and moved the puck to Jenelle Kohanchuk at the point who found the back of the net at the 19:49 mark of the second frame. Toronto would out shoot Montreal 13-3 at the end of the second frame.
It would take less than five minutes for the tie to be broken as Kelly Terry gave Toronto the lead at the 4:16 mark of the third period. Assisting on the play were Kohanchuk and Emily Fulton. Despite their efforts, Montreal would be unable to tie the game at the end of 60 minutes and giving Toronto the 2 – 1 win.
Cathrine Herron would stop 28 of 30 shots. Christina Kessler would get the win for the Furies stopping 18 of 19 shots.
Toronto and Montreal will face off again tomorrow afternoon at MasterCard Centre. Puck drop is 1:30 pm
